WHO IS NELS?
He's the little guy in the picture back in 1985 and the athletic man pictured on the right as he is today. Nels was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) called Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return and an Atrial Septal Defect. When he was nearly 3 years old he had open heart surgery.
At 5 years old he was given a clean bill of health. He has lived a very healthy life since. While in college, he wrestled for Iowa State University.
Curiosity got the best of Nels a couple of years ago and he started researching the reason for the 6 inch scar on his chest. Nels discovered that he was not a rare case and that 1 in 100 children are born with a CHD (many much more serious than his). Ten percent of these children don't reach their first birthday. Research has helped the CHD death rate to decline by 30% in the last decade, but is still terribly underfunded.
That discovery gave Nels his life's mission statement: "...to use my athletic abilities & innovative ideas to host events that will save and improve the lives of children challenged with a CHD..."
